Botox vs Fillers: what’s the difference and what’s right for you?

As a cosmetic doctor, I get asked every day: “Should I take Botox or fillers?” The answer isn’t black and white. Botox and fillers are two different treatments that each have their own function. In this article, I’ll explain the difference and help you decide which treatment – or combination – is right for you.

The fundamental difference

Botox and fillers work in a completely different way. Botox relaxes muscles and reduces wrinkles caused by muscle movement, such as frown lines, forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet. We call these dynamic wrinkles.

Fillers add volume. They fill creases, restore lost volume and can improve contours. Think of lips, cheeks, the jawline and the nasolabial fold.

When do you choose Botox?

Botox is the best choice if you have facial expression wrinkles: horizontal lines on your forehead, frown lines between your eyebrows, crow’s feet around your eyes, or bunny lines on your nose.

Botox is also effective for excessive sweating, migraines and teeth grinding. The effect occurs after 3-5 days and lasts an average of 3-4 months.

When do you choose fillers?

Fillers are suitable when you want to add volume or improve contours: fuller lips, more volume in the cheeks, a sharper jawline, correction of the nasolabial fold or treatment of puffiness and tears. Fillers give immediate results and – depending on the zone – last 1 to 3 years.

The combination: the best of both worlds

In practice, we often combine Botox and fillers. This is what we call a Liquid Facelift. By using both treatments strategically, we achieve a complete rejuvenating effect: Botox relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles, while fillers restore the volume that is lost with age.

The result? A fresh, natural face where no one sees that you’ve been treated — exactly what we aim for at Kliniek Dokter Frodo.

Common mistakes

If patients only have Botox done when they are actually losing volume, the face can look “flat”. Vice versa: only fillers without Botox leave the dynamic wrinkles untreated. A good analysis is therefore essential.

My advice

Don’t be guided by what your girlfriend had or what you see on Instagram. Each face is unique. At Clinic Doctor Frodo, we always start with a comprehensive facial analysis. We’ll look at what wrinkles you have, where volume loss has occurred, what you want and what you expect, and your overall facial proportions.

Based on this, we make a personal treatment plan. Sometimes Botox alone is enough. Sometimes just fillers. And sometimes the combination is the key to the best result.

Conclusion

Botox and fillers are not competitors, but partners. They complement each other. The trick is knowing when to use which treatment — and that requires expertise and a holistic view of the face.
